Introduction

The importance of the functions of management in any organization can never be overrated. Management is needed in every business in order for it to compete successfully and survive, and this is what Technoscan’s chief executive officer recognizes. According to Dr. Osama Khalil, the chairman of board of directors of Technoscan, any institution can not succeed without an effective management team. He says that it’s a misconception in Egypt that it is enough for clinics, hospitals and medical institutions to be run only by doctors. He believes that without its management team, Technoscan wouldn’t have been where it is today.

Technoscan overview

Technoscan is one of the leading radiology centers in Egypt, which offers diagnostic services that is of the newest technology. Technoscan was founded in 1986. It is one of the six companies composing Technogroup Holding (Technmedicine, Technoscan, and Technorad).TechnoGroup represents the summit of the economic pyramid of the group in Egypt as regards Cairo and Alexandria stocks and also the Central saving of its stocks through the Egyptian National Bank (Main Tower Branch). Technogroup company works by means of a permit from the Investment Market corporation and the investing companies; and that is through a fully paid capital of 22 million Egyptian pounds paid in cash and permitted capital with a value of 100 million Egyptian pounds. Also Techoscan company (within the technoGroup) owns a share in the Egyptian Medical Service company in Menoufia Despite the permission given to the Technogroup to work in almost all economic fields, yet up till this date it does not work in any fields other than Diagnostic Radiology through its different divisions. Prof. Osama Khalil owns most of the shares of the Technogroup and the rest of the shares are owned by family members and until this date none of the shares were sold out as decided by the owners.

Vision

Technoscan has expanded all over Egypt now owning 15 branches in 8 different governorates and has recently opened its main branches in Cairo in Maadi, Misr Elgdedia, and 6^th of October last year. Its services are offered to a variety of markets in Egypt, where its branches are spread in many different locations to service different market segments. Technoscan is a medium sized company, there are currently 300 employees working in Technoscan, their professions range from doctors and technicians to accountants and marketers. Technoscan offers a variety of the most up to date medical services such as Open MRI, Multi-slice CT, digital X-ray, Radio-isotope scanning, Doppler ultrasound, transvaginal and transrectal ultrasound, mammography, DMSA, 3D and 4D ultrasound. All of these services use the most high-tech equipment in the world, where these services are offered in very few places in Egypt, some are even unique to Technoscan such as the radio-isotope scanning for which Technoscan owns one of a few, if not the only, machine in Egypt. Even with 15 branches existing, Technoscan still aims at expanding even more all over Egypt, however this is its long run goal. In the short run, Technoscan is focusing on anchoring and strengthening its Mohandesin branch which is still very young, and which is facing rough competition from existing centers such as Cairoscan, Alfascan and FirstLab, who have been present in the market for more than 10 years

Technoscan’s vision is not just to become a part of the treatment of the patients, rather to become the treatment themselves. They believe that their job has become far more than just the diagnosis of a disease, and has become much closer to contribute to the curing of the disease. As a radiology center, Technoscan’s aim is not just to discover diseases, but to be part of the treatment for those diseases. To help the patients not just by offering them better services, but also by offering them more thorough diagnosis and recommendations. Although these values are held by the management, there is no real written mission statement in the company that expresses these values in the entire company, so they are not explicitly shared with all the members in the organization. However, even though there is no real mission statement in the company, managers in Technoscan always stress to their employees the importance of their customers, the patients, where the statement "the patient comes first" is stressed by managers.

Technological environment

Technoscan depends on high technological equipment in all of its operations. Not just the diagnostic equipment, but also the use of information technology and networked computing in its entire operations, where all the work done is paperless work that is more efficient and effective. Because of this any technological innovation in the market affects Technoscan, and allows it to search for new ways to improve its operations.
